Aquaman 3 (2025) – The Final Tide in the DCEU

The End of an Era

Aquaman 3 was long speculated by fans after the success of the first two films, but as of the DC Studios’ current direction, it stands as an unlikely reality. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023) closed out not only Arthur Curry’s cinematic journey as envisioned by director James Wan, but also marked one of the last chapters of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). With the transition into the newly restructured DC Universe (DCU), led by James Gunn and Peter Safran, the studio is pivoting toward fresh storylines, characters, and reimagined heroes—meaning Aquaman’s legacy in its current form has reached its conclusion.

Jason Momoa’s Future in DC

Jason Momoa, who became synonymous with the role of Arthur Curry, is not leaving the DC world entirely. Although he’s unlikely to return as Aquaman in the new canon, Momoa is expected to take on a different character—rumored and teased to be the anti-hero Lobo. This shift signals that while the actor’s charisma will remain in DC films, the trident may have been passed for good.

James Wan’s Perspective

Director James Wan has expressed openness to returning for a potential Aquaman 3, but only if given the creative freedom that shaped the first two films. However, with the DCU focusing on a new interconnected storyline, the prospect of a third Aquaman film under his vision remains slim. Wan’s approach to the underwater epic—blending fantastical visuals with mythic storytelling—helped distinguish Aquaman as a unique part of the DCEU, making its end feel like the closing of a distinctive chapter.

Why a Third Film Won’t Happen

Several factors cement the decision:

  1. Narrative ClosureThe Lost Kingdom resolved key arcs for Arthur Curry, Atlantis, and supporting characters.

  2. Universe Reboot – The DCU’s fresh slate leaves little room for continued DCEU-era stories.

  3. Casting Shifts – With Momoa moving into a new role, continuity for Aquaman becomes less feasible.

Legacy of Aquaman

Regardless of its cinematic fate, Aquaman’s two-film run left an indelible mark. It brought underwater kingdoms to life with groundbreaking visuals, expanded DC’s tone beyond the dark grittiness of its earlier films, and made a character once underestimated into a box-office powerhouse. For many fans, Aquaman 3 will remain a “what if” — a final ride across the waves that exists only in imagination.
