Movie Review: I Am Legend 2: Last Chapter (2025)

Nearly two decades after the original, I Am Legend 2: Last Chapter brings Will Smith back to one of his most iconic roles — and delivers a bold, emotional, and action-packed continuation that reshapes how audiences remember the franchise.

The film picks up years after Robert Neville’s fateful battle in New York. Choosing to follow the alternate ending of the 2007 film, Neville survived and now lives in isolation, haunted by guilt and responsibility. When a new strain of the virus emerges — one that threatens not just the remnants of humanity but the evolved “Darkseekers” themselves — Neville is forced into one last mission that could determine the fate of both species.

From the opening sequence, director Francis Lawrence sets a bleak yet breathtaking tone. The ruins of Washington, D.C. become the new stage, with haunting imagery of vines overtaking monuments and packs of Darkseekers lurking in the shadows of fallen landmarks. The world feels bigger, scarier, and more desperate than ever.

Will Smith gives a powerhouse performance, portraying Neville as older, more fragile, but still driven by a mix of survivor’s instinct and hope. He’s joined by Michael B. Jordan, playing a hardened scavenger who challenges Neville’s worldview and adds both conflict and brotherhood to the story. Their dynamic gives the film its emotional backbone.

The action is tense and visceral. From claustrophobic encounters in abandoned subway tunnels to a nail-biting siege inside the Capitol building, the film balances heart-stopping set pieces with quieter, reflective moments. The depiction of the Darkseekers evolves too — they’re not portrayed purely as monsters, but as a species fighting for survival in their own right.

Thematically, the film explores coexistence, forgiveness, and the blurred line between human and monster. While some fans may miss the stripped-down simplicity of the original, Last Chapter takes risks that pay off emotionally.

Verdict:
I Am Legend 2: Last Chapter (2025) is a gripping, haunting, and surprisingly hopeful sequel. It doesn’t just rehash the first film — it expands the story in meaningful ways, giving Robert Neville the sendoff he deserves.
