Independence Day 3: Hope for Another Alien Epic

Director Roland Emmerich Has a Story in Mind

At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, director Roland Emmerich revealed that he has a story idea ready for Independence Day 3. He expressed enthusiasm to continue the saga and said he’s “ready to go” whenever the studio approves.

No Official Green Light from Disney

Since Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, the future of the Independence Day franchise has been uncertain. As of now, there has been no official confirmation that a third installment is in development, nor is there a release date.

Why the Sequel Remains Unlikely

The lukewarm critical reception and underwhelming box office performance of Independence Day: Resurgence (2016) slowed momentum for another sequel. Several producers and writers involved in the franchise have also indicated they do not currently plan to move forward with Independence Day 3.

The Franchise May Live On in Other Forms

While a theatrical sequel seems unlikely for now, speculation continues that the story could live on through other formats, such as a television series or streaming adaptation, should Disney decide to revive the franchise in a different way.
